The Staff

   The teachers at JSMS represent some of Bloomington, Indiana's most creatively active musicians: They are playing in and leading a multitude of bands in the area. They are working hard as songwriters and arrangers, and as organizers of projects and events. They're here to show the musicians of tomorrow (and today!) what it looks like to make their dreams come to life, through inspiration and daily effort. 

Interest-Driven Learning

   Music has many facets: People have found an almost infinite variety of ways to express themselves with sound! With that in mind, the teachers at JSMS believe that there are many paths to learning any instrument.

   'JSMS is a fantastic place. Aside from being wonderfully accomplished musicians, Ben Fowler and Aaron Comforty are hands down the best teachers I've seen at connecting with kids and making lessons both fun and challenging.   We aim to cater each student’s education to their interests: the teachers at JSMS will go the extra mile to teach you to play what you love! Song learning is combined with reading and technical work, so that the beginning musician develops a broad musical understanding along with solid technique. We also interject songs that have inspired us, through listening and learning. In this way, teacher and student can share in the vast river of musical inspiration that flows on through time!
